The origin of the name is disputed. Most people keep the name from Dafir, a Belgian town where the use of thick tweed cloth to make bags originated in the 17th century.

However, recent research suggests that the name may come from the House of Orange's cousin, Sir Alfred Duffle, who moved to England after his ascension. According to the Oxford English Dictionary, the word dates back to 1677 and was used to describe "tweed with thick fluff or ribbon ornamentation". For most of the 20th century, duffel bags generally referred to a specific style of cylindrical with the top going into the bag. The terms used in part of the latter began to be applied to universal hoop treatment, and hard-backed tote bags were more commonly referred to as "sports bags". And it is this bag that has other features such as wheels that often add zippers, zippers, internal structures and small organizing bags.
